The Age Test calculates calendar (or genealogical) age and an estimated birthdate for your dog.
We designed an algorithm that focuses on the methylation patterns that are very strongly correlated with actual age. To develop our accurate algorithm, we chose 500+ dogs with known ages. These dogs represent:
- 100+ breeds
- 200+ mixed-breed dogs
- Toy, small, medium, large, and giant dogs
We then measured the amount of DNA methylation across the dogs’ genomes and used that information to create an algorithm for the Age Test that can predict any dog’s age within +/- 5 months for 70% of dogs and within +/- 10 months for 92% of dogs.
How does it work?
We use a saliva test that is similar to our current kits (i.e. Breed ID, Breed and Health Kit), but that has key differences. Instead of being based on your dog’s DNA sequence, this test is based on epigenetics.
How do we know the results are accurate?
After extensive testing with hundreds of dogs who ranged in age from 6 months to 18 years old, from over 100 breeds and breed mixes, and of various body sizes and weights, our science team is confident we have developed the most accurate canine age test on the market. In your results, you’ll receive an estimated age and birthdate, plus our confidence levels at both five and ten months in either direction and personalized advice for care based on your dog’s life stage.
