We query seventeen genetic variants known to significantly impact body size
About seventeen genetic variants explain over 85% of the variation in body size—and thus body weight—across dog breeds. Embark's proprietary genetic weight algorithm takes your dog's genotype at these variants to generate a predicted adult weight.
About 80% of the time, we're right on the money with weight prediction. However, some populations of dogs have shown to be more variable and more likely to be underestimated or overestimated by our algorithm. This includes mixed-breed dogs and dog breeds with natural variation in body size, such as the Staffordshire Terrier group. Village Dogs also tend to be among those that we have a wider variation of weight predictions.
Why is this? These three dog populations represent some great examples of things we can't factor into our genetic weight predictions—yet!
