While our traits page provides a helpful overview of what we’d expect your dog to look like based on their genotypes, we can sometimes see a description that may not perfectly match the appearance of our dog. This can occur for a few reasons:
- Interactions with other genotypes that may modify the expression of some traits
- Genetic interactions we can not currently account for. This can include traits we do not test for or unknown-to-science interaction effects.
- Sometimes genes interact and express in ways we’d never expect and we don’t always know why!
- Breed-specific expression of certain traits - certain breeds don’t express some genes as others do. For example, Dachshunds don’t express white from the white spotting gene called the S locus!
Trait expression and inheritance in dogs can be very complex and surprising–if you have questions about interpreting your trait results, you can always contact us to discuss them with one of our Results Specialists!
