Our manufacturer is required to include an expiration date upon production due to the components of the swab. Over time, after the date specified on the tube, the fluid begins to lose its potency. Similar to the items in the grocery stores that include a "sell by" date, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the food spoils immediately after the date, but instead the freshness can slowly wear off.
We urge you to still use the kit to collect and submit your sample. If your swab is in fact expired, our lab would catch this during quality control, as the sample would fail. In these cases, we would issue a free replacement swab for a new sample.
