While our traits page provides a helpful overview of what we’d expect your dog to look like based on their genotypes, we can sometimes see a description that may not perfectly match the appearance of our dog.. This can occur for a few reasons:
- Interactions with other genotypes that may modify expression
- Genetic interactions we can not currently account for, including traits we do not test for and unknown to science interaction effects
- Sometimes gene interactions express in ways we’d never expect and we don’t always know why!
- Breed-specific expression of certain traits - certain breeds don’t express some genes as others do. For example, Dachshunds don’t express white from the white spotting gene!
Trait expression and inheritance in dogs can be very complex and surprising–if you have questions about interpreting your trait results, you can always contact us to discuss them with one of our Results Specialists!
